Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of volatile, aromatic plant extracts or 'essential oils'. These oils are chosen by an aromatherapist based on their individual properties and the synergy of the blend of oils. Essential oil properties can include uplifting, analgesic, relaxing, anti-spasmodic, etc.

What can Aromatherapy be used for?

•Muscle conditions such as soreness, fatigue and spasm

•Arthritic joints (either cold, or hot and inflamed)

•Catarrh and sinus disorders

•Anxiety and stress

•Skin conditions such as eczema, acne

•Varicose veins

How can essential oils be used?

In addition to massage, Emma may recommend blends for bathing, inhalation or application. She may also make up creams, or ointments if required.

Are there any reasons why I should not have Aromatherapy?

If you have a medical condition such as cancer, or have recent history of heart attack, stroke, etc, then it is advisable to check with your GP before attending your appointment.

Certain essential oils are contraindicated in specific conditions so it is important to mention any medical conditions during your consultation.

Can I have Aromatherapy during pregnancy?

Certain essential oils should not be used during pregnancy, however there are many oils which may be safely used. One point to bear in mind is an increased sensitivity of smell during pregnancy, therefore it is important to let Emma know if there are any smells that you particularly dislike. You will be able to smell your blend before it is used if you are concerned about this.

Certain essential oils such as Jasmine and Clary Sage are also useful at the end of your pregnancy to encourage labour.
